Levees are embankment water retaining structures which have many similarities but also many differences with dams, whether reservoir dams or flood storage dams. Embankment dams and levees share similar individual deterioration and failure mechanisms related to their materials and components, but, as their environment and loading conditions are different their failure modes (scenarios) are different. Levee failure modes can be quite complex with the interaction of different mechanisms.

The proceedings of the conference (including many papers about levees, or simply interesting for levee issues) can be downloaded from the conference web site.

It's important to notice that levee issues are clearly taken into account by the conference organisers, as well as by many of the 26 country that contributed.
